Cathy Bentz received a BA degree, magna cum laude, in English from Ohio University in 1980. She received her Juris Doctorate degree in 1986 from Temple University School of Law, where she was an Assistant Editor of the Temple Law Review. After graduating from law school, she worked for five years in the Business and Estate Planning Department of a large Philadelphia law firm, Hoyle, Morris & Kerr. When her family moved to Pittsburgh for her husband’s job, she worked as an in-house attorney for Mellon Bank, advising the Middle Market and Private Banking Departments. Cathy came to the Lake Norman, North Carolina, area at the end of 1994 and her practice, in Cornelius, North Carolina, focuses solely on estate planning and business law.
Cathy was a member of the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors from 2001-2007, served as its Vice Chairman of Membership in 2004, and won its Starrette Service Award in 2007. Cathy is also a member of the North Mecklenburg Rotary Club, served as its President from 2009-2010, Secretary from 2001-2002, and Foundation Chairperson from 2012-2013, and was named her club’s Distinguished Rotarian in 2011. She was also the District 7680 Chairman of Community Service from 2010-2011 and served as an Assistant District Governor from 2014-2017 and the District Club Service Chair from 2017-2018. She is currently the Club’s Foundation Chair.
Cathy has been on the Visit Lake Norman Board of Directors since 2007 and is its Assistant Treasurer. She was on the United Way of the Mooresville/Lake Norman area Community Investment Council from 2005-2008 and its Board of Directors from 2015-2018. She currently serves on the Our Towns Habitat Board of Directors. She was named as one of Business Today’s Most Influential Women in the Golden Crescent in 2006. She served on the Williamson Chapel United Methodist Church Finance Committee from 2005-2008. Finally, Cathy has served on the Wells Fargo Bank’s Lake Norman Advisory Board since 2010.
Most importantly, Cathy has been married to Al Bentz since 1986 and has two daughters, both of whom graduated from Appalachian State University. One just completed her PhD at the University of Georgia and is a Post Doctoral Fellow at Indiana University and the other graduated from Charlotte School of Law, practiced law with Cathy, and is now a Compliance Officer for US Trust.
